2026-27 Hockey Program
The NBCHS Hockey Program will be offered in the 2026-27 school year during Semester 1 (Sept-Jan) for students in Grades 7-9. Ice times are booked every Tuesday and Thursday at the Access Communication Centre starting in early September.
What do students learn in the program?
The program brings a holistic approach to hockey by offering students the ability to develop hockey skills, fitness levels, mental training and leadership. On-ice development focuses on skating, stick-handling passing shooting and more.
On-Ice Coach: Owen Lamb
BIO: Growing up in The Battlefords, I played all my minor hockey here, including U18 AAA. Following this I was lucky enough to play for the North Stars from 2016-2019, where I was part of some really successful teams. I went on to play university hockey at the University of Alberta Augustana, where I completed a degree in business management and was the captain of the program in my final two seasons. Since moving home, I have taken my passion for the game and shifted it to coaching. I am currently working as the assistant coach for the North Stars and running the on ice portion of the NBCHS Hockey Program. I am excited for another hockey season to be getting underway and look forward to helping develop some aspiring players from the community.
Classroom Teacher & On-Ice Support: Ashley Rafuse
BIO: I grew up in the small hockey community of Edam, playing boys hockey most of my life. When I entered grade 11, the AAA female league in Saskatchewan formed, allowing me to play here in North Battleford with the AAA Sharks program for 2 years. I then received a scholarship to play college hockey for the next couple years. I eventually ended up back in North Battleford teaching at NBCHS. In 2013, I joined the coaching staff of The Battlefords AAA Sharks, taking over as head coach for the following season. My husband and I decided to start a family in 2016, which took me away from my coaching role, but allowed me to fill a few different roles for the program such as billet parent, school liaison, and acting board member, which I still sit on to this day. Today, I am a busy mom of 4 kids under the age of 9, three of which are involved in hockey, so I am back in a coaching role. I currently teach in the senior PE and photography programs, while also running the hockey 10/20/30 courses. I have the utmost passion for not only developing young hockey players and theirs skills but helping shape these young players into amazing young men and women. I look forward to continuing with the program in the fall.

Why Hockey?
Hockey is a fun activity that offers students the opportunity to make new friends, get physically active, and build important skills like hand-eye coordination and strategic thought.
It is also a great sport for building character and gives those involved the opportunity to learn the value of teamwork, sportsmanship and personal responsibility. At NBCHS, we want to offer students the most comprehensive education possible, and hockey is a large part of this community and the Canadian identity. We are excited to be able to include it in our program offerings.
